Outslugged by Beavers

STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Teaghan Cowles had a pair of hits and sophomore Nikki Bauer tossed a complete game, but Oregon State beat Stanford softball, 4-1, on Saturday at Smith Family Stadium.

Bauer needed just 15 pitches to get through the first two innings. She allowed just one run through the first four innings, before the Beavers busted through with back-to-back two-out home runs in the fifth to go up 4-0.

Stanford threatened several times with runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth, before breaking through in the fifth. Sophomore Hannah Howell laced a two-out double off the wall in right center and then scored on an RBI single to left by sophomore Kristina Inouye.

Cowles was 2-for-4 with two singles, while Howell finished 1-for-3 with a run and Inouye was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Molly Fowkes added a single among Stanford's five hits. Freshman Maya Jackson made her first career start and made a diving catch in right field to save a run in the third.

In the circle, Bauer allowed seven hits in seven innings and struck out three.

Stanford and Oregon State return for the series finales on Sunday. It will be Little League Day at the ballpark with a t-shirt giveaway and free ice cream for kids beginning at noon.
