Stanford competes in first ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Stanford competes in its first Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday through Saturday at Wake Forest University’s Kentner Stadium.

The Cardinal had competed in the Pac-12 and its previous versions (Pacific Coast Conference, AAWU, Pac-8, Pac-10) since 1919. Now, the ACC represents the fifth different outdoor conference championship meet Stanford will participate in. Stanford competed in the IC4A meet 15 times from 1916-35, five Western Conference (now the Big Ten) meets between 1904-14, and the Missouri Valley Conference meet in 1914.

Stanford had mixed results at the ACC Indoor Championships on March 1-3 in Louisville, Ky. The Cardinal women were second, winning five individual titles, and the men were 12th. Stanford’s ACC indoor champions were Alyssa Jones in the long jump and high jump, Roisin Willis in the 800, Sophia Kennedy in the 3,000, and Zofia Dudek in the 5,000.

Jones, a junior, was named ACC Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet. She never has lost a conference long jump competition, winning Pac-12 titles in 2023 and 2024 and the ACC indoor title in 2025. The Pac-12 did not have indoor track and field.

Willis, a junior, and the NCAA outdoor 800 runner-up last year, is perfect in conference championships while racing the 800. The won the 2024 Pac-12 outdoor and 2025 ACC indoor titles in the 800. As a freshman in 2023, she competed in the 1,500 at the Pac-12 outdoor meet, and there was no Pac-12 indoor meet.

This will be the fifth conference outdoor championship meet for Stanford under sixth-year Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field J.J. Clark and his staff.

This weekend will be the final opportunity to qualify athletes for the NCAA Prelims. The top 48 advance in individual events and 24 on relays advance. The top 24 in the country in the multi-events advance to the NCAA final.

The NCAA West Prelims is in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 28-31. From there, the top 12 advance to the NCAA Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.

The Stanford men have won 10 conference outdoor championships, the most recent in 2002 in the Pac-10.
