CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Stanford seniors Scott Lipsky and David Martin advanced to the doubles quarterfinals of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Men's Championships with a pair of victories on Thursday afternoon at The Champions Club.
Top-seeded Lipsky and Martin, who advanced to the NCAA Doubles Final last year, fought off a match point before defeating Bobby Reynolds and Lewis Smith of Vanderbilt 9-7 in the first round. The Stanford seniors then rolled to an 8-4 second round win over Benjamin Becker and Benedikt Dorsch of Baylor, and will next meet eighth-seeded Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman of BYU in Friday afternoon's quarterfinals.
In singles, all three Stanford entrants dropped first round main draw matches. Two of those three players will begin consolation bracket play Friday morning.
Martin, who was seeded eighth, fell to Georgia's Bo Hodge 6-4, 7-6 (6). Martin will face Wade Orr of Tennessee in a first round consolation match on Friday at 6:00 a.m. (PT).
Lipsky was forced to retire because of an injury while trailing Richard Barker of Rice 7-5, 3-1. Because of the injury, Lipsky has dropped out of the consolation singles bracket and will only play doubles for the rest of the tournament.
Freshman K.C. Corkery, who reached the main draw with a pair of impressive qualifying wins, fell to Virginia Commonwealth's Florian Marquardt 6-3, 6-2. Corkery opens consolation play against Nathan Price of Arkansas on Friday at 7:30 a.m. (PT).
