STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Tommy Edman and sophomore Andrew Summerville were each recognized as Academic All-District honorees by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. The distinction awards the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
A computer science major, Edman is the starting shortstop for the Cardinal and maintains a 3.84 GPA at Stanford. The San Diego, Calif., native has played in 128 consecutive games for Stanford and started the last 125 in a row. He leads the team in hits (45), triples (4) and stolen bases (4), and is second on the team in batting average (.296), runs (23) and RBI (19). Edman was also a 2015 Academic All-District and Academic All-Pac-12 honoree, and currently anchors the best defensive team in the nation as Stanford leads the NCAA in fielding percentage (.986).

Summerville holds a 3.72 GPA in Stanford's Management, Science and Engineering program. The Seattle, Wash., product is 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA for the Cardinal this season. He has been especially strong out of the bullpen with a 0.89 ERA. In six relief appearances he has allowed just two earned runs in 20.1 innings with 17 strikeouts.
Only first teams were chosen for both the baseball and softball district teams, so all honorees will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team ballot, where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Stanford hosts rival Cal for a three-game set beginning on Thursday night at Sunken Diamond. All three games begin at 7 p.m., and can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
