STANFORD, Calif. - Senior defensive lineman Harrison Phillips was named a finalist for the Bobby Bowden Award on Tuesday.
Phillips is one of four finalists, joining Micah Kiser (Virginia), Dorian O'Daniel (Clemson) and Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State). The award ceremony will take place Jan. 7 in Atlanta.
The Bowden Award was established in 2003 and is presented annually to the FBS player that epitomizes the consummate student-athlete and conducts themselves as an exemplary model in the classroom, on the field, on the campus and in the community. Clemson's DeShaun Watson won the award last season.
Phillips, who also was a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, led all FBS defensive linemen with 100 tackles. The team captain and Omaha, Nebraska, native led the Cardinal with 17.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. He is set to graduate two quarters early as a double major in science, technology and society, and sociology.
Phillips helped lead the Cardinal (9-4) to the Pac-12 North Division title and Pac-12 Championship Game. Stanford will face TCU (10-3) in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28 in San Antonio, Texas. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (PT), and ESPN will broadcast the game.
