Professional Baseball Organization: San Diego Padres (13th round - 2008)
Professional Baseball Career: Was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft...had an outstanding start to his professional career, pitching for the Eugene Emeralds in the short-season, single A Northwest League...went 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA (8er, 26.2ip) in 14 games (five starts)...compiled 39 strikeouts in just 26.2 innings, while allowing only 18 hits and seven walks...had been drafted twice before, but did not sign a professional contract on either occasion...was selected by the Anaheim Angels in 2004 (47th round) and the Texas Rangers in 2007 (21st round).
At Stanford: Enjoyed an outstanding four-year career on The Farm, and was one of the Pac-10's top starters over his final two campaigns...finished 15-7 with six saves, a 4.80 ERA (121er, 227.0ip) and four complete games in 78 appearances (27 starts)...Stanford was an impressive 21-6 (.778) in his 27 career starts...worked at least 6.0 innings in 12 of his 27 career starts, while lasting at least 7.0 frames in nine outings...fashioned a 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, fanning 195 against 95 walks.
As a Senior in 2008: Was an All-Pac-10 selection after a stellar senior campaign in which he went 8-3 with a 4.70 ERA (54er, 103.1ip) and four complete games in 18 outings (16 starts)...recorded nearly a strikeout per inning, fanning 103 in 103.1 innings of work...also yielded fewer hits than innings pitched, while holding opposing batters to a .262 average (102-for-389)...ranked among the Pac-10 leaders for innings pitched (2nd), starts (t-2nd), strikeouts (4th) and wins (t-5th)...led Stanford in wins, starts, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts...the Cardinal went 13-3 (.813) in his 16 starts...worked at least 6.0 innings in nine of his 16 starts, while lasting at least 7.0 frames in seven outings...opened Pac-10 play with four consecutive complete-game victories, and finished with a 5-1 record, 3.90 ERA (26er, 60.0ip) and .229 average against (49-for-214) in eight conference starts...logged 58 strikeouts in 60.0 Pac-10 innings...went 7-0 with a 2.64 ERA (19er, 64.2ip) in a nine-start stretch from March 1-May 4, while Stanford was a perfect 9-0 in those contests...yielded a paltry .208 average against (48-for-231) during the stretch, with 65 strikeouts...struck out 10 over 7.0 innings March 22 at Pacific, yielding three runs on five hits (2bb) in a 7-3 win...tossed his first career complete game in a March 29 victory over Washington State, allowing three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts (3bb)...hurled a four-hitter in a complete-game, 12-2 triumph over Arizona State on April 5 (2r,2er,6bb,5so)...went the distance in a 6-4 win at Oregon State on April 12, striking out nine (8h,4r,4er,2bb)...struck out a career-high 13 in his fourth consecutive complete game, a 6-1 win at UCLA on April 19...limited the Bruins to one run on seven hits, with just one walk, in a dominating performance...was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week on April 22 for his effort in Los Angeles...went 1-1 with a 7.00 ERA (14er, 18.0ip) in five postseason appearances (three starts), with 20 strikeouts...earned the win in relief as Stanford defeated Miami, 8-3 at the College World Series...went 4.0 innings against the Hurricanes, with six strikeouts (7h,2r,2er,2bb).
As a Junior in 2007: Posted a 4-2 record and notched one save with a 5.29 ERA (30er, 51.0ip) over 18 appearances (six starts)...struck out 42 batters in 51.0 innings...had a .263 opponents average that was the best on the team for any pitchers with more than 12.1 innings of work...made starts in his final six appearances during an end of the year resurgence in which he cracked the Cardinal rotation during the second half of Pac-10 action...came out of the bullpen in his first 12 outings...lasted at least 6.2 innings in three consecutive starts from May 7-20, winning each of the last two starts and posting a 1.74 ERA by allowing just four earned runs over 20.2 innings during the stretch...made his first career Pac-10 start against Oregon State on April 29...had a 2-2 record, one save and a 6.06 ERA in 11 Pac-10 appearances (four starts), striking out 29 in 35.2 innings.
As a Sophomore In 2006: Went 1-1 with four saves, while recording a 4.91 ERA (18er, 33.0ip) in 22 outings (one start)...ranked tied for second on the club for appearances, and was second in saves... pitched in seven Pac-10 games (all out of the bullpen), recording one save and a 5.68 ERA with five strikeouts in 6.1 frames of work...posted saves on back-to-back days during the NCAA Austin Regional against Texas (June 3) and North Carolina State (June 4), tossing a combined 3.2 scoreless innings.
As a Freshman In 2005: Had a promising rookie season, posting a 2-1 record with one save and a 4.31 ERA (19er, 39.2ip) in 20 games (four starts)...compiled 28 strikeouts in 39.2 innings...ranked tied for first with Nolan Gallagher among Stanford's freshmen pitchers in wins and games started, as well as second behind Gallagher in ERA, appearances, combined shutouts, innings pitched and strikeouts...made his collegiate debut with a perfect relief inning (1so) in the second game of a January 30 doubleheader vs. Fresno State...earned his first save February 6 at Cal State Fullerton, working the final 3.1 innings...picked up his first career win in his second start, April 12 vs. San Francisco (5.0ip,5h,1r,1er,0bb,3so)...posted a 4.50 ERA without a decision in four Pac-10 appearances out of the bullpen... was unscored upon in five of his last six outings, spanning 10.0 innings of work...got in a pair of NCAA Regional games out of the bullpen and pitched 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
High School: Graduated in 2004 graduate from Mountain View (Calif.) High School...was selected as a 2004 All-American by Aflac and Baseball America, and was also a National Player of the Year and Baseball America Youth Player of the Year finalist...ranked 15th among Baseball America's 2004 Top 100 High School Prospects and was 13th overall by Team One...played in the 2004 High School All-American Game in Albuquerque, New Mexico...named to the 2004 all-state team by Cal-Hi Sports...also a Baseball America Preseason All-American as a senior in 2004...twice earned first-team All-Santa Clara Valley Athletic League honors (2003 and 2004)...named second-team All-Central Coast Section as a senior and third-team All-CCS in his junior campaign...led his team to the 2004 SCVAL El Camino League title...notched seven wins and two saves in 17 appearances as a junior, with a 1.31 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 75.0 innings pitched...twice named his squad's Spartan Athletic Scholar (2003 and 2004)...coached by Craig Walsh (2002) and Jake Schwartzberg (2003-04).
Other Amateur Baseball: Posted a 4-1 record and a 4.78 ERA during his second season with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2007, striking out 25 in 32.0 innings pitched over seven starts...pitched in just two games for Brewster during the summer of 2006 before suffering a serious season-ending injury when he was hit in the face by a line drive during his second appearance on June 18...had two surgeries (June 19 and June 30) but miraculously returned to pitch for the Maxim Yankees for one outing on August 18 just over six weeks after the second surgery, tossing 3.0 hitless innings...had a 5.79 ERA with no decisions and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings over his two appearances (one start) for the Whitecaps...pitched for the Maxim Yankees in the summer of 2005, going 4-2 with a 2.48 ERA and co-leading the team with 47 strikeouts in 36.1 innings over eight starts...struck out nine batters over 4.1 innings in one no-decision appearance at the 2005 National Baseball Congress World Series with the Yankees, but had an 8.31 ERA after giving up four earned runs...a member of the USA Junior National Team in both 2003 and 2004, helping the Americans to a silver medal showing at the 2003 World Championships in Curaçao and a fourth place finish at the 2004 World Championships in Taipei...had two appearances (one start) for the USA Junior National Team at the 2004 World Championships, posting a 6.75 ERA and striking out five in 6.2 innings...pitched at the 2003 Pan American Cup, where he did not allow an earned run and gave up just three hits, while striking out 18 batters in 13.2 innings to be named the Best Right-handed Pitcher of the event...played with the 2004 NorCal Baseball club that finished fifth at the WWBA Senior Championships...spent four summers (2000-03) with the West Bay Titans, along with former Stanford teammate David Stringer, helping the team to a second place finish at the AAU Nationals in 2002, as well as seventh place showings in 2001 and 2003...was named the No. 1 Prospect at the 2003 Perfect Game National Showcase.
