STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford and North Carolina have agreed on a home-and-home series to be played over the next two seasons, it was announced on Friday.
The Cardinal will host the Tar Heels on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017 at Maples Pavilion. The second game in the series will be played in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018.
"We are excited to compete against college basketball's elite programs and North Carolina is the cream of the crop when it comes to exceptional programs," said Stanford's Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men's Basketball, Jerod Haase. "I have the utmost respect for Coach Williams and the North Carolina program. I have been privileged to have the opportunity to learn under Coach as both a player and a coach myself.
"We are looking forward to welcoming the Tar Heels to The Farm next season," Haase continued. "The addition of the Tar Heels further strengthens a very exciting 2017 nonconference schedule."
After playing three seasons for head coach Roy Williams at Kansas (1995-97), Haase spent 13 years on Williams' staff with the Jayhawks and Tar Heels.
When Williams was named head coach at North Carolina prior to the 2003-04 season, he brought Haase with him as an assistant coach and director of operations, a title Haase held from 2003-09. Haase then served exclusively as an assistant coach during his final three seasons with North Carolina.
During Haase's four seasons as the head coach at UAB, the Blazers and Tar Heels met three times, with UAB earning a win over UNC on its home court during the 2013-14 season.
Stanford is 0-10 all-time against North Carolina, with the last meeting coming on Nov. 29, 2002 in the Preseason NIT in New York, New York. The only previous meeting between the two teams on the Stanford campus came on Dec. 3, 1983, when the Michael Jordan-led, top-ranked Tar Heels defeated the Cardinal, 88-75, in the Stanford Invitational tournament. Stanford played a pair of games in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1985 and 1988. The other seven games in the series were contested on a neutral court.
