STANFORD, Calif. - For a school-record eighth consecutive season, Stanford will play in a postseason football bowl game.
The Cardinal (9-3) will face North Carolina (8-4) in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 30 in El Paso, Texas. Kickoff is slated for noon (MT), and CBS will broadcast the game nationally.
The programs have split two meetings, the latter a 1998 Cardinal win at Stanford Stadium.
The bowl appearance will be the 28th ever for No. 16 Stanford, which enters the game as winners of five straight.
This will be Stanford's fourth trip to the Sun Bowl, the first coming in 1977 against LSU and second in 1996 versus Michigan State. The Cardinal played Oklahoma in the 2009 edition. Stanford is 2-1 in its previous Sun Bowl showdowns. The Cardinal is 9-10 all-time against the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The contest will mark the 83rd anniversary of the Sun Bowl game and the 49th consecutive broadcast on CBS.
