STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Katie Ledecky was named the Women's Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year on Wednesday night.
Some of Ledecky's highlights in 2017:
U.S. and International Competition• Won six medals, including five gold medals at the 2017 FINA World Championships, where she earned world titles in the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 1,500m freestyle as well as the 400m and 800m freestyle relays; and added silver in the 200m freestyle; Set a women's record of 14 career gold medals in FINA World Championships competition
• Ranked No. 1 in the women's 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 1,500m freestyle in the International Swimming Federation (FINA) world rankings
• Won the women's 400m freestyle at the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis with a time of 3:58.44, breaking her own United States Open record, while adding victories in the 200m and 800m freestyle
• Won the women's 1,500m freestyle at the Arena Pro Series in Santa Clara in the fifth-fastest time in history for the event, all set by Ledecky
• Won the women's 200m freestyle at the Arena Pro Series in Santa Clara (June)
• Won the women's 800m freestyle at the Arena Pro Series in Mesa and Atlanta with the fastest times of the year
NCAA Accolades• Was awarded the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year by Honda
• Became the second athlete to win the Honda Cup as the nation's top collegiate women's athlete as a freshman after winning five NCAA titles and helping lead the Cardinal to the NCAA women's team championship.
• Became the first NCAA swimmer in 29 years to capture individual NCAA titles in the 200, 500 and 1,650-yard freestyles, and was a member of Stanford's American record-setting 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays at the 2017 NCAA Championships in March
• Posted nine American-record performances and 12 NCAA-record swims in her first year at Stanford
• Holds seven Stanford school records
• Five All-America honors at the NCAA Championships
• Helped Stanford to the Pac-12 team championship with four Pac-12 titles (all in American record time)
• Pac-12 Swimming Newcomer of the Year and Pac-12 Conference Championships Swimmer of the Meet
• Won the Sport Award for Swimming and Diving, given by Honda
Ledecky also won her fourth straight Female Athlete of the Year honor at the USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards in November, earned the USA Swimming Athlete of the Year and Performance of the Year honors at the U.S. Aquatic Sports Convention in September, and was inducted into the Washington D.C. Sports Hall of Fame.
Ledecky begins her sophomore season with the No. 1-ranked Cardinal at the Pac-12 vs. USA Swimming Challenge in Los Angeles, Calif., Oct. 21-22.
