STANFORD, Calif. – Junior first baseman Matt Winaker earned Academic All-America third team recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Friday.
Winaker, who was also named Academic All-Pac-12 and CoSIDA Academic All-District, maintains a 3.65 GPA as a science, technology and society major.
On the field, Winaker was an All-Pac-12 selection and was named the first baseman for the All-Pac-12 Defensive Team. He ranks among the top 10 in the conference in walks, runs, on-base percentage, runs batted in, home runs and slugging percentage.
Winaker is one of just eight Academic All-Americans playing in the NCAA Championships this weekend.
Stanford (41-14) had its best regular season in 13 years and is the No. 8 national seed for the NCAA Championships. The Cardinal is hosting a Regional for the first time in five years and won its opener on Thursday night, 10-0, over Sacramento State.
The Cardinal plays Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. PT for a chance to advance straight to the Regional final on Saturday. The game can be seen worldwide at ESPN.com/watch.
