SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Nathan Wang fired off a team-best 5-under card while Jay Leng rattled off a 3-under performance as the Stanford men’s golf team completed the second round of competition at the 78th Western Intercollegiate. Through 36 holes, Stanford sits in a tie for fourth place at 1-under.
Wang’s 5-under second round was miraculous for the round as he sat tied for the second-best round of the day individually. Wang, who started out hot with a birdie on the first hole of the afternoon, collected six birdies on the afternoon while only shooting one bogey during the round on the par-3 hole three. He currently sits at 6-under through 36 holes and only three shots back of the individual lead heading into the final day of competition.
Jay Leng had a turnaround round from the previous day to finish at 2-under through 36 holes, earning a 3-under, 67, courtesy of four birdies through the front nine. Leng, who was one of three Stanford golfers to save a stroke on hole nine, earned his final birdie of the day on the par-5 hole 13, while shooting par the rest of the back nine to finish in a tie for 14th overall. TK Chantananuwat had a rough start to the afternoon before earning a stroke on hole nine, hitting the turn at 1-over. Chantananuwat continued to battle through the remainder of the round, eventually finishing at 2-over for the day which slots him in a tie for 14th overall at 2-under through two rounds.
The course got the better of most of the teams during Tuesday’s round as Stanford joined the list of 11 other schools that shot over-par for the day. Logan Kim had a back-and-forth back nine, turning an eagle on hole 13 before extra strokes cost him in his final three holes to finish at 4-over for the day.
Ethan Gao also had a grudging back nine, earning three birdies and three bogeys as the front nine sealed his afternoon at 7-over. Both Kim and Gao currently sit inside the top-50 at 4-over and 5-over, respectively. Dean Greyserman battled back from a tough stretch along the front nine, finishing 3-over on his final nine holes and turning in a 10-over card.
Stanford is back in action tomorrow, April 16 for the final round at the Western Intercollegiate with Greyserman leading the Stanford charge to the finish at noon from hole 1.
