Men’s Tennis Downs Duke, Advances to ACC Championship

No. 8 Stanford will face Virginia for the ACC title on Sunday.

CARY, N.C. – No. 8 Stanford men’s tennis advanced to the ACC Championship match in its first conference tournament, defeating No. 19 Duke, the sixth seed, 4-2, at Cary Tennis Park. Stanford improves to 21-5 this season with the win.

Despite the win, Stanford had to come from behind after dropping the doubles point. Duke led on all three courts, and it took the lead after earning results on courts one and three.

Stanford briefly trailed by two points, 2-0, before answering with four in a row to win the match. Shortly after a Duke win on court one, Hudson Rivera put Stanford on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court six. Rivera moved to 2-0 at the ACC Championships with his ninth win of the year. Henry von der Schulenburg leveled the match at two apiece with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court four, earning his team-best 18th win in singles on the year.

Alex Razeghi put Stanford in front for good with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court five, his 14th of the season, while Max Basing clinched the match for the second consecutive match in Cary, taking a three-setter on court three, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The win was the 15th of the year for Basing, and his 12th in dual play.

Stanford improved to 2-0 this season over Duke with the win and 9-2 all-time.

Stanford will take on No. 6 Virginia for the ACC title, with first serves set for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, April 20.
