Stanford Gets Past Menlo

Cardinal advances to MPSF quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif. – Theo Snoey and Moses Wagner combined for 40 kills to lead No. 13 Stanford past Menlo College, 21-25, 25-20, 28-26, 25-23, Wednesday, in the second round of the MPSF Tournament at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Stanford (12-14) hit .384 as a team – its third-highest output of the season, and racked up 60 kills, 32 digs and 12.0 blocks. Menlo (13-13) hit .318 and registered 50 kills, 28 digs and 5.0 blocks and seven aces.

Snoey finished with a match-high 23 kills on .310 hitting, four digs and a block, while Wagner had 17 kills on 32 swings with just one miscue to hit .500. The opposite also notched five blocks and four digs.

Menlo appeared to have won the pivotal third set as Snoey sailed a ball out of bounds to make it 27-25 Oaks. However, a timely challenge by John Kosty, the Birkhoffer Family Head Coach, showed a touch off the Menlo block to change the score to 26-26. A solo block by freshman Kaumana Carreira and an attack error by the Oaks gave the Cardinal a 2-1 lead in the match.

Setter Theoren Brouillette controlled the offense with 47 assists and had six digs, a kill and a block. Freshman libero Evan Porter tied for a match-high with 10 digs to go with six assists, while outside hitter Nate Clinton chipped in with seven kills on .312 hitting, four digs and four blocks.

Middle blocker Reed Wainwright recorded a match and career-high nine blocks, including two solo. The freshman also had seven kills on a .500 attack percentage. Carreira added five kills on .375 hitting, four digs and two blocks.

Menlo was led by outside hitter Ty Carson’s 12 kills on .450 hitting. Wojciech Nowak posted 10 kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Oaks.

Stanford is back in action on Thursday, facing No. 7 BYU in the MPSF quarterfinals. First serve is slated for 8 p.m. on B1G+.
