Men’s Tennis Downs New Mexico in NCAA Opening Round

No. 5 Stanford advances to the NCAA round of 32 to face No. 25 Pepperdine.

STANFORD, Calif. – Fourth-seeded and fifth-ranked Stanford men’s tennis opened its NCAA Tournament with a win, downing No. 62 New Mexico, 4-0, at Arrillaga Tennis Center-Taube Pavilion. Stanford improves to 23-5 on the season, marking its most wins in a single season since 2003, and it advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight season.

The Cardinal opened with a strong performance in doubles, winning on courts two and three. Samir Banerjee and Alex Razeghi scored a 6-1 win on court three, the duo’s sixth win this season together, while Kyle Kang and Henry von der Schulenburg won on court two, 6-3, for their fifth win of the campaign.

The momentum carried into singles as Stanford won five of six first sets. Kyle Kang was efficient and dominant on court two, winning 6-1, 6-0 for his 10th victory of the season. Max Basing extended the Cardinal advantage to 3-0 on court three with a 6-2, 6-3 win, his 17th of the season and 14th in dual play. The dual win was the 54th of Basing’s career, tying him for 26th in Stanford history with Ricky Becker.

Alex Razeghi clinched the match on court five, his fourth match clincher of the season. His 6-2, 6-3 win was his 16th of the season and team-best 16th in dual matches.

Stanford advances to face No. 25 Pepperdine on Saturday, May 3 at Arrillaga Tennis Center-Taube Pavilion. The first serves are set for noon.
