Men's Swimming and Diving: Season in Review

Stanford excelled in its first season in the ACC

THE STANFORD MEN'S swimming and diving team made an impact in its first season Atlantic Coast Conference, winning four individual titles at the conference championships and placing second as a team.

Stanford, under Dan Schemmel, The Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming, and head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey, went on to place eighth at the NCAA Championships.

The Cardinal was led by an outstanding senior class that featured ACC Diver of the Year Jack Ryan, 26-time All-American Andrei Minakov, and 23-time All-American Ron Polonsky.

Ryan became the program’s first ACC champion, winning 1-meter diving at the conference meet in Greensboro, North Carolina, by coming from behind on his sixth and final dive of the final to win.

Ryan followed up his 2024 Pac-12 Diver of the Year award by earning the ACC’s honor, and Jeffrey was named ACC Men’s Diving Coach of the Year. Ryan’s final ACC honor was being named ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s swimming and diving.

For the second consecutive year, Ryan was Stanford’s highest placer at the NCAA Championships, placing second in 1-meter diving and third at 3-meter.

Minakov won ACC titles in the 100-yard butterfly and 200 fly. He collected eight All-America honors this year, with four on the first team, including in the 100 fly and 200 fly. His top NCAA finish this year was fourth in the 200 fly, which also was the highest for a Cardinal swimmer.

A 2021 Olympian for the Russian Olympic Committee, Minakov holds seven school records – in the 100 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, and four relays. Polonsky, a two-time Israeli Olympian, holds Stanford records in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breast, and three relays.

Together, Minakov and Polonsky own 49 All-America honors and hold school records in five individual events and are part of four school-record relays.

Sophomore Henry McFadden won an ACC title in the 200 freestyle, reached the NCAA final, and twice broke the school record in that event, with a best of 1:30.83.

McFadden joined Polonsky, and Liam Custer as Academic All-Americans, with Polonsky earning first-team honors for the third consecutive year.

Polonsky set five school records during the NCAA Championships – in the 100 breast (50.47), 200 breast (1:50.95), 800 free relay (6:06.69), 200 medley relay (1:22.23), and 400 medley relay (3:00.91). He was fifth in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 IM at the NCAA Championships.

Two freshmen reached the NCAA Championships and performed well there. Misha Andriyuk was the ACC runner-up in platform diving and reached the NCAA final, placing eighth.

Li earned second-team All-America honors in the 200 breast, placing 15th overall. He also moved up to No. 3 on Stanford’s all-time Top-15 list in that event.

Stanford swimmers set six school records in 2025 and 14 swimmers and divers earned All-America honors – the third-most of any school in the country.
