Stanford survives rain-soaked third round, Revuelta wins again

NORMAN, Okla. — Weather impacted the NCAA Norman Regional in a major way, forcing the field to golf 36 holes on Monday and wait anxiously for the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Top-seeded Stanford entered the day pacing the field and finished that way once again, winning the Norman Regional to secure its seventh NCAA Regional win since 2016. Additionally, Andrea Revuelta won her second tournament in a row to claim individual medalist honors.

Tee times were delayed until 12:30 pm PT due to weather in the area, including flood warnings in Norman. It wasn’t until after 1 pm PT that the entire Cardinal lineup teed off, with half the field still waiting to go. This caused the top half of the field to finish, with still half of the field needing to complete their rounds on Wednesday at 7:00 am PT.

Despite the tough conditions, it was Revuelta once again jumping to the top of the leaderboard and staying there. She played her best round of the week in Norman, posting a clean 5-under 67 to finish the tournament with an 8-under 208 (68-73-67). The round got off to a fast start for Revuelta, as she birdied on four of her first six holes to give her a two-stroke cushion over the field. She then held on the rest of the way, watching the rest of the field get stuck in neutral as sunset crept closer.

Revuelta etched her name in Stanford history with her win in Norman, becoming the fifth Cardinal to win an NCAA Regional and the third freshman, joining Albane Valenzuela (2017) and Rachel Heck (2021). She is the first Cardinal to win consecutive tournaments since Rose Zhang won three straight to close out the 2023 season (Pac-12, Regional, NCAA Championship). Revuelta is also the third Cardinal this season to win her second tournament, joining teammates Megha Ganne and Paula Martin Sampedro.

One of the golfers Revuelta had to overtake to get the win was ACC Freshman of the Year Meja Örtengren, who sits unofficially in third place with a 6-under 210 (68-71-71). She gave up the lead to Revuelta early thanks to Revuelta starting strong, but then Örtengren tied her atop the leaderboard thanks to four-straight birdies on holes five through eight. Those would be the last circles Örtengren would put on the scorecard, however, as she went 1-over on the back nine to end her week. Still, as it stands, it is her sixth top-10 finish of her freshman season.

One of the best Stanford rounds of the day came from Kelly Xu as she continued to battle back after shooting a 76 in the first round. Despite being up and down on the front nine, she found her groove on the back nine, going 3-under to finish with a 2-under 70, her best round of the week. It tentatively climbs her up to a tie for 17th overall, a net gain of 22 spots.

Ganne and Martín Sampedro are currently tied for eighth as play finishes up. Ganne got to 214 overall with a 74 in the final round, while Martín Sampedro shot a 73. Martín Sampedro had one of the craziest cards of the rain-soaked affair, with two double-bogeys, an eagle, and three birdies over her final six holes to get back into the top-10. Ganne also finished strong, with three birdies of her own on the back nine.

Also advancing to the NCAA Championship are Northwestern, Michigan State. The other two teams above the cut line to advance are Oklahoma and Baylor, and both are likely to advance, but that will be confirmed following the completion of tomorrow’s play. Audrey Ryu of Furman is currently in position to advance as an individual after Wednesday.

The 2025 NCAA Championship begins on May 16 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play over the first three days before the field is cut down 15 teams with the top nine individuals for an additional round of stroke play. This will determine the top eight teams advancing to match play, where the national champion will need to win three times.

Stanford is the defending NCAA champion after beating Auburn, USC, and UCLA in match play in 2024. The Cardinal has won two of the last three NCAA titles and three overall since the tournament format switched to match play. Stanford has made the match play portion of the NCAA Championship every season since it was instituted in 2015.
