Men’s Tennis Shuts out South Carolina, Reaches NCAA Finals Site

Stanford reached the NCAA quarterfinals with a super regional win over the Gamecocks

STANFORD, Calif. – Finishing an unbeaten home slate with a win in the NCAA Super Regionals, No. 5 Stanford men’s tennis shut out No. 13 South Carolina, 4-0, on Friday at Arrillaga Tennis Center-Taube Pavilion.

The Cardinal improves to 25-5 on the season, the most since winning 25 in 2003, while ending the campaign 12-0 at home. The Cardinal’s NCAA quarterfinals appearance is its first since 2012.

The fourth-seed in the NCAA tournament, Stanford secured an early lead in doubles with a pair of ranked wins on courts one and two. First, the pair of Kyle Kang and Henry von der Schulenburg earned a 6-4 victory on court two over the ITA’s No. 56 pair, while Nico Godsick and Hudson Rivera tallied their highest-ranked victory as a tandem on court one, beating the ITA’s third-ranked pair, 6-4, to give the Cardinal the edge.

A clinical performance was on display in singles, as the Cardinal took all six first sets by scores of 6-3, or better. Alex Razeghi doubled the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court six, earning his team-leading 18th dual win of the campaign. Posting his team-best 21st overall win in singles, von der Schulenburg made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph on court four.

Max Basing – who clinched all three singles matches at the ACC championships and five different matches this season – provided the final blow to the Gamecocks, earning a ranked win on court three, 6-1, 6-4. Basing improves to 18-7 on the season while posting his 55th-career dual win, tying him for 25th in program history along with Bob Bryan.

Stanford will take on the winner of No. 5 Ohio State and No. 12 Mississippi State on Friday, May 16 in Waco, Texas on the campus of Baylor.
