Alameda began her collegiate career by leading St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas to the NAIA national tournament as a pitcher. After a season there, she transferred to Oklahoma. A great all-around athlete, Alameda also was a defensive specialist on the Oklahoma volleyball team.

After receiving her communications degree from Oklahoma, Alameda played and coached overseas. In 1993, she played professionally in Holland for seven months, and her team placed second in the European Championships.

Following that, she helped coach the national team of Aruba. Prior to coming to Stanford, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Barry University in Florida. During her first season at Barry, the team finished fifth at the NCAA Division II Championships.
