Baiocco Beats Sun Devils

STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Ali Baiocco scored five goals and No. 19 Stanford women's lacrosse won its first-ever matchup with Arizona State, 17-7, on Friday at Cagan Stadium.

Stanford (6-3, 3-1 Pac-12) scored the game's first nine goals and never looked back.

Nine different Cardinal found the back of the net as Kelsey Murray, Areta Buness, Galen Lew and Jacie Lemos all scored twice, and Genesis Lucero had six draw controls to lead the Cardinal attack. Goalkeepers Trudie Grattan and Allie DaCar each had five saves. 

Senior captain Dillon Schoen got the nine-goal run going with the first tally a little more than two minutes into the contest. Murray scored twice and Baiocco had a hat trick before Jacie Lemos made it 9-0 with 19:51 to go in the half.

It was the first matchup between the two schools as Arizona State (5-6, 0-4) is in its first year as a varsity program. The Sun Devils scored their first goal 11 minutes into the game, and were never within eight.

Buness scored twice before the half and Stanford led 14-4 at the break. 

Both teams scored three times in the second half. Monika Sivilli scored Stanford's last goal of the game for a 17-6 lead with 9:51 remaining.

Stanford outshot the Sun Devils, 39-21, and led 26-14 in ground balls and 17-9 on draw controls. 

Next up, Stanford takes on first-place USC on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cagan Stadium.
