ONE RACE WAS in the morning at Mt. San Antonio College. The other was in the evening 10 miles north, at Azusa Pacific University. The commonality were Stanford athletes sprinting down the stretch to earn big victories Friday on Southland tracks.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Teagan Zwaanstra won the collegiate section of the women’s 100 meters in 11.40. Friday night, at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Leo Young won Section 1 of the men’s invitational 1,500 in 3:38.00. Both results were personal records and among the best in Stanford history.
On a busy day, with athletes spread across three Los Angeles County meets, the Cardinal combined for 10 personal records, three additions or improvements to the Top-10 outdoor lists, and two additions to Stanford’s Top-5 freshmen lists.
Zwaanstra, a senior, has had a career year. During her first two years, Zwaanstra focused on the long jump and ran only one 100. She fully embraced the 100 last year, dipping to a windy 11.68.
However, this year, Zwaanstra has been on another level. She broke her personal 60 record four times during the indoor season, which concluded at the Atlantic Coast Conference final, in which she placed seventh.
Zwaanstra opened the outdoor season with a big 100 personal best of 11.46 to win the Hornet Invitational, won the Stanford Invitational, and now is 3-for-3 after winning at Mt. SAC. Her 11.40 jumps Zwaanstra from No. 9 to No. 6 all-time at Stanford.
Young, a sophomore, stormed from behind over the final 50 to run down Davis Helmerich of Arkansas and hold off Washington’s Rhys Hammond for the victory. Young crossed the line with a 1.39-second improvement on his 2023 best.
Young now stands No. 7 in school history, nudging past Olympian Jonathan Riley (3:38.90). Placing fourth in the race was Stanford teammate Zane Bergen, who PR’d by nearly four seconds. Bergen’s 3:39.20 placed him at No. 9 in Stanford history.
Also, James Dargan was second in Heat 4 in 3:41.11, a three-second PB that placed him No. 4 all-time among Stanford freshmen. In another section of the 1,500, Caleb Boutelle (3:46.55) a 2 1/2-second improvement.
And in the women’s 1,500, Hillary Studdert ran 4:21.19 – a personal best by 11 seconds.
Back at Mt. SAC, another encouraging development came in the men’s 4x400 relay. Stanford’s team of Ryce Reynolds, Olufemi Cole, John Kroeger, and Zachary Ryan won their heat and placed third overall in 3:10.13 – Stanford’s best time since 2019 indoors, and best outdoor time since 2018.
Action continues Saturday with the elite sections of the Mt. SAC Relays, and a few throwers compete at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State.
