STANFORD, Calif. – Alyssa Jones began Stanford’s day with one of the best long jumps of her career. And the Cardinal ended Friday’s action at the Stanford Invitational with a flurry of elite performances in the distance events.
Jones, a five-time top-four placer in the long jump at NCAA championship meets, had her farthest season-opening jump of her life. Jones won the event at Cobb Track and Angell Field by jumping 22-4 ¼ (6.18 meters), just two inches from her personal best, which she achieved in placing second at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jones, a junior, got enough distance on her second jump, of 21-6 (6.55) to win, but it was her third jump that traveled the farthest.
Last year, Jones opened at the Stanford Invite, albeit in the rain, with a jump of 20-4 ½ (6.21). And in 2023, she opened the season with a jump of 21-0 ½ (6.41). She has won the Stanford Invite all three years.
The evening was devoted to distance events and Stanford runners combined for four personal-best performances in the men’s 5,000 and another two in the 10,000. The most notable was sophomore Lex Young’s 27:48.93 for second in the 10,000.
Young closed the fast section by pulling away from Northern Arizona’s David Mullarkey on the way to breaking his PB by 1:36. Young’s time placed him No. 5 in Stanford history. It also led a parade of Stanford PB’s in the 5,000: James Dargan in 13:36.74, a time that placed him No. 3 on Stanford all-time frosh list, Robert DiDonato’s 13:39.96, and Milo Skapinsky’s 13:54.40, his first sub-14.
Thomas Boyden was not far behind Young, running a PB of 28:06.84, to become No. 7 in Stanford history.
For the women, Zofia Dudek also closed strong, and placed third in the fast section of the 5,000. Dudek ran 15:23.46 – a nine-second personal record – to place herself No. 5 at Stanford all-time. Dudek’s time also placed her at No. 6 on Poland’s all-time list.
Teagan Zwaanstra had the day’s fastest 100, qualifying for Saturday’s final by running 11.56. In the long jump, Zwaanstra also was third in the long jump at 20-6 ¼ (6.25), a mark that was aided by a just-over-the-legally-allowable wind of 2.0 meters per second.
Overall, five meet records fell on Friday and an Ecuadorean national record, by Andrea Paula Bonilla in the 5,000 in 15:37.55. And Stanford athletes set 13 personal records.
