BERKELEY, Calif. – As Cate Peters crossed the finish line with a 14-second advantage in the 4x400-meter relay, the final event of the day, the Stanford women closed out their second consecutive victory in the Big Meet.
On an ideal day at Edwards Stadium, both the Cardinal men and women ended the 130th renewal of the Stanford and California track and field rivalry on a high note.
Stanford beat Cal, 87-72, to increase the Cardinal’s series lead to 30-15 since the women’s meet began in 1980.
The Cal men beat the Cardinal, 95-65, earning their fourth consecutive victory in the series and a 75-53-2 advantage overall.
The 4x400 relay does not begin until all the other events are completed, including field events, and takes center stage with each team lining one side of the straightaway, creating a tunnel for the relay runners to go through.
Peters anchored Stanford to victory in a season-best 3:37.13. Sage Hinton led off and was followed by Roisin Willis and Juliette Whittaker and Peters.
The Cardinal men won in 3:09.63 for its fastest outdoor time since 2018. The team was Zachary Ryan, Ryce Reynolds, John Kroeger, and Joseph Bailey. Reynolds gave Stanford a lead it would not relinquish, winning by 2.75 seconds.
It marked the first time since 2018 that Stanford swept the 4x400 races.
Overall, four meet records were broken – three by Cal and one by Stanford. For the Cardinal, Sophia Kennedy won the women’s 1,500 in 4:15.93. That broke the mark of 4:16.41 by Cal’s Claire Yerby in 2016.
Cal’s discus world-record holder, Mykolas Alekna, won in a meet record 233-10 (71.29). Other Cal meet records came from Johnny Goode in the men’s 400 (45.83) and from Caisa-Marie Lindfors in the women’s discus (201-10, 61.52).
The women’s meet was close. Through 10 events, Cal led, 42-40. However, a sweep in the 100 gave Stanford the go-ahead points, and a 49-42 lead. Teagan Zwaanstra (11.58) led a 1-4 Stanford finish in the nine-runner field. Alyssa Jones (11.77), Alaysia Oakes (11.94), and Ariana Guerrero (12.05) took second through fourth.
Jones was a triple winner. She won the long jump (20-6 ½, 6.26), high jump (5-10 ¾, 1.80) and was the second leg of the winning 4x100 relay team (44.54).
Stanford clinched the victory in the penultimate event – the 3,000. Kennedy earned her second victory of the day, in 9:18.27 and led a 1-2-3 scoring sweep. Audrey DaDamio (9:29.72) was second and Imogen Gardiner (9:37.35), in the first race she’s finished this year, used a strong kick to place third.
Cal led men’s competition from the opening event, the men’s hammer, scoring a 9-0 shutout in that event.
Stanford men’s highlights included Olufemi Cole’s 100 victory in a personal record 10.54, Sam Liokumovich’s shot put triumph in a season-best 60-11 ¼ (18.57), and Garrett Brown’s pole vault victory in 17-4 ¼ (5.29). Also, Thomas Boyden won the 3,000 in 8:07.27 and was second in the 1,500 in 3:45.91.
There were two additions or improvements to Stanford’s all-time outdoor Top-10 lists: Lianne Kistler improved her spot at No. 9 in the pole vault with a jump of 13-1 ½ (4.00) and Kaiah Fisher entered at No. 10 in the women’s shot put with a personal best of 50-10 (15.49).
Overall, there were 14 personal bests by Stanford athletes. Gabriel Ajaegbu had two – 21.28 in the men’s 200 and 48.41 in the 400.
Thus ends the regular season for Stanford. The Cardinal next competes in its first Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships, May 15-17 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
