Stanford, Calif. - USC's Blythe Hartley completed a three-day sweep at the 2002 NCAA Zone E Diving Meet by winning the women's platform event on the final day of competition at the Maas Family Diving Center. Hartley, who had won the women's 1-meter on Thursday and the 3-meter on Friday, scored 482.45 for the victory. Arizona's Ruben Vaca also helped the Wildcats earn a clean sweep in the men's competition with a victory in the platform (499.85). Vaca's teammate Omar Ojeda had swept the first two days of competition with wins in the men's 3-meter on Thursday and the 1-meter on Friday.
A total of 15 divers (nine women, six men) qualified for the 2002 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships during the three-day NCAA Zone E Meet.
Women's divers qualifying for the NCAA's were Kellie Brennan (USC), Claire Febvay (Arizona), Dominica Fusaro (USC), Hartley, Kim Powers (Stanford), Heidi Prosser (UCLA), Ashlee Rosenthal (Stanford), Erica Sorgi (Stanford) and Alexis Sowa (Stanford). Brennan and Febvay were the new qualifiers on Saturday. Brennan reached the NCAA's due to her fourth-place effort in the 1-meter on Thursday, while Febvay's third-place finish in the platform qualified her for the NCAA's.
Men's divers qualifying for the NCAA's were Josh Anderson (Arizona), Andy Bradley (BYU), Ojeda, Adam Peterson (Stanford), Vaca and Justin Wilcock (BYU). Vaca and Bradley joined the other four previous men's qualifiers on Saturday. Vaca's victory in the platform earned him a spot in the NCAA's, while Bradley picked up his spot thanks to a fourth-place finish in Thursday's 3-meter.
Stanford had four women qualify for NCAA's for the first time in school history and Peterson was the first Cardinal men's diver to earn a spot in the NCAA's since David Johns in 1996.
"This was a great meet and a very strong showing for our team," said Stanford head diving coach Dr. Rick Schavone. "But, our main goal is still the NCAA's."
Sorgi was the top Cardinal finisher on Saturday, scoring a season-best 425.40 in the platform to earn a fourth-place showing. McKenze Murphy finished fifth (399.00) but narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA's, while Sowa was sixth (380.95) and Powers placed 10th (361.05).
Peterson was Stanford's top male diver in the platform with a fifth-place showing (449.90), while Jesse Fonner placed eighth (427.65).
The 2002 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 21-23 in Austin, Texas. The 2002 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 28-30 in Athens, Georgia.
