STANFORD, Calif. – Former Stanford men's tennis standout Bradley Klahn has qualified for the main draw at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, joining fellow former Cardinal star Mike Bryan in this coming week's Grand Slam event.
The Wimbledon Championships begin Monday, July 2 and run through Sunday, July 15, at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London.
Klahn defeated Simone Bolelli, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6, in a qualifying round on Thursday to earn a spot in this coming week's main draw of 128 players.
Klahn's first-round opponent is Yuichi Sugita of Japan. The match is scheduled for Tuesday (July 3) at 3:30 a.m. PT.
This is Klahn's second appearance in the Wimbledon main draw. He qualified in 2014, dropping a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 decision to Sam Querrey in the first round. Klahn has competed in all four Grand Slam events, with four appearances in the U.S. Open (2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and one appearance each in the Australian Open (2014) and French Open (2014).
Mike and Bob Bryan, twin brothers and former Stanford teammates, have won 16 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including Wimbledon doubles crowns in 2006, 2011 and 2013. Bob is unable to compete with his brother in the 2018 Wimbledon Championships due to injury. Mike Bryan will compete with Jack Sock in the doubles main draw, facing Andreas Seppi and Daniele Bracciali of Italy in their Round of 64 match on Wednesday (July 4) at 3:30 a.m. PT.
A three-time ITA All-American (2010-12) and the 2009 ITA National Rookie of the Year, Klahn captured the 2010 NCAA Singles Championship as a sophomore. Klahn completed his Stanford career with a stellar 130-34 overall record. Klahn's 70 dual victories rank 11th in program history. He posted an outstanding 133-33 record in doubles during his career on The Farm.
Axel Geller, who just completed his freshman year at Stanford, captured the 2017 Wimbledon Boys' Doubles Championship (playing with Hsu Yu-hsiou). He was runner-up in the 2017 Wimbledon Junior Championship (lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-7(2), 3-6 in the championship match).
