SEATTLE – Sophomore Louis Stenmark broke Stanford and meet records in the 600 meters at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday, running 1:17.59 to earn the victory on the 307-meter Dempsey Indoor track at the University of Washington.

Stanford had strong performances from its 41-member team in the team's true season opener, including what is believed to be a school freshman record in the women's 20-pound weight throw by Jordan Fong, whose mark of 55-0 ¼ (16.77 meters) came in her collegiate debut and near her home in Kent.

Because the 600 is not a championship distance, Stanford typically races it only at this meet each year. Stenmark's time was impressive nonetheless. He broke the school mark of 1:18.39 set in 2014 by Luke Lefebure, who reached the NCAA outdoor 800 final that year. The meet record of 1:17.74 was held by Washington's Maurice McNeal since 2013.

Stenmark, from Mosman in New South Wales, Australia, ran more than four seconds faster than he did in this meet last year. Unlike Lefebure, Stenmark is a 400-meter specialist and helped break the school indoor record in the 4x400 relay last year. The mark seems to indicate great things to come from Stenmark, who redshirted the outdoor season, but owns a 46.29 personal best.

Julian Body was second in the 600 in 1:19.38, a personal best and the No. 3 time in Stanford history, and Isaac Westlund was fourth in 1:21.26, also a lifetime best.

Stanford won seven events, four for the women and three for the men. Besides Stenmark, Stanford men's winners were multi-event athlete Harrison Williams in the long jump (23-4, 7.11m) and the 4x400 quartet of Westlund, freshman Miles Zoltak, Body, and Gabriel Navarro in 3:14.29.

For the women, sophomore Aria Small won the triple jump at 41-3 ¾ (12.59m), the No. 5 indoor jump in school history. Lena Giger won the shot put at 54-10 ¾ (16.73m). Giger was sixth in the event at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships. Carolyn Wilson, a sophomore transitioning from the 400 to the 800, won the 600 in 1:31.54, with Arizona high school star and Stanford signee Morgan Foster third in 1:31.82. Also, the team of Wilson, Ashlan Best, freshman Kennedy Gamble and Missy Mongiovi, won the 4x400 in 3:45.76.

Kaitlyn Merritt was fourth in the pole vault but first among collegians, clearing 13-5 ¼ (4.10m), which matches her 2018 jump as the No. 2 all-time at Stanford.

Also, Clayton Mendez ran the fastest mile by a Stanford freshman since 1998, when he clocked 4:06.05 to place eighth.

Stanford returns to the same track on Jan. 25-26 for the UW Invitational.
