Gameday Hub: Oregon State

  • Stanford continues its road trip on Saturday when it takes on Oregon State inside Reser Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Cardinal left Stanford last Tuesday for Seattle to prepare for its game at UW and then bussed to Corvallis on Sunday afternoon to begin preparation for the showdown with the Beavers.
  • Stanford and Oregon State will meet for the 77th time on Saturday at Reser Stadium. The Cardinal is 58-25-3 all-time against the Beavers. Stanford has won 10 straight over Oregon State, with David Shaw owning a perfect 9-0 mark against the Beavers. Stanford is 27-14-1 all-time in games played at Oregon State.
  • Davis Mills was 8-of-10 for 133 yards on third down against Washington. All eight completions resulted in first downs as he led the Cardinal in converting 10-of-13 (76.9%) third downs in the game.
  • Austin Jones became the first Cardinal running back since Christian McCaffrey (2016) to record back-to-back multi-rushing touchdown games.
  • After holding Washington to a field goal which made it 31-26, Stanford took over at its own 12 yard line with 7:47 to play in the game. On the drive, the Cardinal ran 14 plays (12 rushes, including each of the final six plays), converting a 3rd-and-10 and 3rd-and-11 on passes from Davis Mills to Simi Fehoko, and a 4th-and-1 to clinch the win, from Austin Jones, who rushed 11 times for 40 yards on the game’s final drive.
  • Stanford has flipped the script on third downs over the last two weeks, staying on the field on offense while getting off the field defensively. Offensively, Stanford has converted 18-of-30 (60%) third-down attempts the last two games, including 10-of-13 on Saturday at UW. The first two weeks, Stanford was 9-of-29 (31%) on third downs. Defensively, Stanford has held opponents to 11-of-24 (45.8%) on third down over the last two weeks, compared to 17-of-25 (68%) in its first two losses.
  • Stanford’s starting offensive line in each of the first four games has been LT Walter Rouse, LG Barrett Miller, C Drew Dalman, RG Branson Bragg and RT Foster Sarell. In total, the OL room has a combined 73 career starts. On Saturday at Washington, seven different linemen played at least 20 snaps.
  • Thomas Booker has blocked an extra point in back-to-back weeks. He is the second FBS player with two blocked PATs this season. The last Cardinal to block a placekick in back-to-back games was Gordon Banks in 1979. Dating back to 2012, no Stanford player has blocked two PATs in the same season. In fact, the last Pac-12 player with two in a season were Utah’s Daniel Nelson and Oregon State’s Mana Rosa, both in 2013. Neither were in back-to-back games. The Cardinal has blocked three kicks in the last two games, blocking both a field goal (Simi Fehoko) at the end of the first half and an extra point (Thomas Booker) to seal a 24-23 victory. It marked the first time since Sept. 21, 2013 at Arizona State that Stanford had blocked two kicks in a game.
