Late Rally Falls Short

Box Score Opens in a new window

TEMPE, Ariz. - Back in action for the first time in almost a full calendar year, No. 2 Stanford used a strong rally late but couldn't catch up to No. 5 Arizona State, falling 10-9.

No. 2 Stanford 9 - No. 5 Arizona State 10

The Sun Devils, who had already played in nine games entering Saturday's contest, started strong, outscoring the Cardinal 3-0 early before freshman Skyler Jones broke through for Stanford. Christina Hicks, another rookie, cut the lead to 3-2, but Arizona State held off the visitors for a 5-3 lead at the break.

The third period was where the Sun Devils got their separation that would prove deadly for the Cardinal, particularly in power play situations. Arizona State scored on three of its seven attempts, while Stanford was 0-of-4.

Despite the deficit, Stanford would not relent, opening the fourth period two goals from Madison Stamen sandwiched between another ASU goal. Hannah Constandse added another, before one more from Chloe Harbilas with less than a minute left. The Cardinal could not capitalize with seconds left, ultimately falling to 0-1 for the first time.
