Lisa Posthumus has been the head coach of the men’s and women’s fencing teams since 1999-2000 and shares head coaching duties with George Pogosov.

Under Posthumus, who also was an assistant coach beginning in 1996, Stanford fencers have won 10 national championships and four have become Olympians, including two -- Alexander Massialas and Vivian Kong -- who were ranked No. 1 in the world simultaneously in 2023. In addition, Cardinal fencers have won 59 regional titles in that span. 

In 2023, Stanford repeated as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion, won four individual conference titles, crowned three NCAA West Region champs and sent four to the national championships. The Cardinal combined for a 691-526 (.568) individual bout record.

As a team, the Cardinal has placed among the top-13 at the NCAA Championships every season since she arrived at Stanford.

Posthumus, a 1993 graduate of Penn State, Prior to joining the Cardinal coaching staff, she was head coach at UC San Diego for three seasons.

As an undergraduate at Penn State, Posthumus led the team to the NCAA Championship in 1990, finishing third overall in women’s foil. She was a three-time letterwinner with a degree in Exercise Sport Science.
