No. 1 in the World

This is a special time for Stanford fencing: Two alums are No. 1 in the world. 

The most recent International Fencing Federation rankings, reflecting results of recent competitions and the entirety of the 2022-23 season, have Vivian Kong '16 at No. 1 in women's epee and Alexander Massialas '16 at No. 1 in men's foil.

This is the second No. 1 ranking for each. Kong and Massialas each were No. 1 in 2018-19. 

Kong, of Hong Kong, won the Grand Prix event in Cali, Colombia, on May 6 and took second at the World Cup in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, on May 19. 

Massialas, of the U.S., vaulted to No. 1 with his third major victory of the season, capturing the Grand Prix in Shanghai, China, on May 20. He also won World Cups in Cairo, Egypt, on Feb. 23, and in Paris on Jan. 12. 
Massialas has five World Cup gold medals and three Grand Prix golds in his career, as well as an Olympic and World Championship silver medals. 
Kong has two World Cup golds and a Grand Prix gold, as well as two World Championship bronze medals.
