St. Mary's City, Maryland - The Stanford Women's Sailing Team started off their spring break training week by competing at the annual St. Mary's Women's Intersectional at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Perfect conditions Saturday in Southerly wind from SW at 14 knots shifting to SE at 8-12 knots. In their first intersectional regatta since last fall's disappointing Fall Champs, the Cardinal women had very inconsistent finishes. With numerous finishes in the top 5 of each division, the team was able to remain close to the top 5 teams.
With a weather front approaching, Sunday featured Northwesterly winds at 20+ knots. The Stanford team was elated by the wind strength and ripped off some of their best races of the regatta. Their joy was short-lived when the Race Committee postponed because some teams were having trouble handling the extreme conditions. With the breeze not showing any hope of diminishing, the afternoons races were cancelled and teams were sent on their way by 1:15pm.
Sailing for Stanford and earning 9th in A Division, Jen Porter and crew Anna Vu. Super-crew Liz Shearer subbed in for Vu in Sunday's windy races. Earning 4th in B Division, Ashley Frush with crew Joanna Madsen on Saturday and crew Margia Corner on Sunday.
The Women meet the Coeds at Georgetown University today to begin five days of spring break training. Friday, the Coeds head to Old Dominion to compete in the Szambecki Team Race.
