Stanford Wins Copley Cup For First Time

April 2, 2006

San Diego, Calif. - No. 4 Stanford captured the San Diego Crew Classic for the first time in 33-year history of the event, knocking off No. 2 California. The Cardinal bolted out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Golden Bears by 2.4 seconds.

"The win was a great achievement for Stanford rowing," said sixth-year coach Craig Amerkhanian. "To be racing with the best creates growth opportunities for our team. We are both pleased and excited to continue our surge in 2006."

Stanford was coming off last weekend's performance at the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic when the Cardinal beat Yale, Penn and Washington.
