Cherry Hill, NJ - Stanford entered four events and won three golds in an efficient regatta for the Cardinal. In dominating performances the Varsity 4, Frosh 4 and Varsity Pair all had the lead by the first half of the race and raced to glory.
In a celebration and tribute to college novice rowers, Stanford University finished with more gold medals than any other university at the IRA Regatta.
The first race of the day was the Freshmen 4+. Racing out of lane 1 with competition from Wisconsin, California and Oregon State, the Cardinal continued to tighten the margin between early leaders Wisconsin and Oregon State, dropping the Cal four in the process. By the finish, Stanford had earned a four second win over trailing Wisconsin and Cal.
In the second race of the day, the Varsity Pair dominated the race by taking control early over all other entries. In a reversal of heat and semifinal racing, the Cardinal attacked and forced the pace. The Cardinal stood tall in this event.
The third race of the day showed the Varsity 4+ as a force to be reckoned with. The four college novices in the boat (and one recruit) made a statement, charging to the lead and pushing the pace. The final margin of victory was 7 seconds over second place Cal.
The final race of the day for the Cardinal proved adventurous as the Varsity4- could not find a rhythm in their third race, settling for fifth.
