Camden, N.J. - The Stanford men's rowing varsity eight boat was one of six boats to qualify for Saturday's Grand Finals of the IRA National Championship by taking third place in the first of four semifinals held Friday on the Cooper River. Stanford clocked in with a time of 5:38.755 to earn a Lane 1 assignment for Saturday's Grand Final, which is scheduled to begin at 12:12 pm, ET.
"Today, we established ourselves again as a national contender," said Stanford head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "We hope to win a national championship someday soon."
Brown, California, Harvard, Princeton and Washington were the other boats to qualify for Saturday's Grand Final.
Stanford's varsity eight lineup Friday was made up of Kevin Baum, Dave Creighton, Ottavio Siani, Alex Osborne, Mark Murphy, Donny Simkin, Nate Rooks, Silas Stafford and coxswain Ariel Dixon.
Stanford will have two other boats competing on action Saturday with the men's varsity four in the Fourth Level final (8:00 am, ET) and the men's freshman eight in the Petite Final (11:24 am, ET).
The men's varsity four includes John DiCola, Ryan DuChene, Justin Brown, Ben Briggs and cox Graham Carroll. The frosh eight boat consists of Scott Runyon, Bobby Pinero, Joe Brendl, Jeremy Hoffman, Nico Sand, Kevin Gheer, Alec Levy, Aaron Frankl and cox Andy Bracken.
The varsity four was fourth in its semifinal, while the freshman eight was fifth in its semifinal on Friday.
"Seniors Donny Simkin, Justin Brown, Nate Rooks, and Kevin Baum have led this team for four years," added Amerkhanian. "Their victories and accomplishments have changed the culture of Stanford rowing. Stanford rowers now expect to race with the best, compete internationally, and each year race for collegiate championships. We thank each of them for going to work each day."
