STANFORD, Calif.- A team effort secured the win for the Cardinal at home this weekend in the McIntyre Team Race. Competing against a field of nine other teams from across the nation, a total of five skippers and eight crews came together virtually flawlessly. Skippers at the event for the Cardinal included Evan Brown '08, Eddie Conrad '08, Cole Hatton '11, Peter Stemler '10, and TJ Tullo '09. While only three boats are on the water for a team at any one time, the Cardinal established a consistent rotation of both skippers and crews to have the best combination on the water for every race. A even more impressive list of crews included Cam Bell '09, Evan Brown '08, Hannah Burroughs '11, Carrie Denning '08, Taylor Grimes '09, Leigh Hammel '10, Kelly McKenna '09, and Sarah Schoknecht '08.Saturday saw a building breeze that favored the deep Cardinal team. At the end of the day, after completing one round robin and making it halfway through a second, the Stanford team remained undefeated. Arriving on Sunday, the Stanford team needed to keep their poise. The in-district team from University of Hawaii stood only one win behind and other teams were close as well. Going into the final four with a one-win lead, the team won out to take the trophy, with U of H securing second place, University of South Florida in third and the Naval Academy finishing in the fourth position in the finals. Not to be outdone by their teammates at the McIntyre, a primarily younger Cardinal team with some older leadership won the Cal Team Race. Seniors Jonah Greenberger and Mariana Beardsworth raced alongside the freshmen duo of Ben Pedrick and Hayley Tobin and the boat of freshman Graham Todd and sophomore Catherine Cu. Seeing a range of conditions, the team remained focused and won every race against the five other teams. With a record of 16-0, the Cardinal sailed to perfection throughout the four round robins. Second place went to UCLA, with Cal finishing third. The next competition for the Stanford team includes a pair of east coast events this coming weekend. The women will be competing in the Navy Women's Spring Intersectional, while the coed team will team race again at the Saint Mary's College of Maryland.
