Women's Team Asserts Pacific Coast Conference Dominance

Oct. 6, 2008

Stanford, Calif. - What began as a sleepy morning with some fog and light drizzle eventually gave way to awakened sunny skies and a shifty and puffy breeze building from 5 to 15 knots. The Stanford A-boat dominated the regatta with five firsts and five seconds to win the ten race regatta by a margin of 14 points. Sailing in the A-boat was skipper Taylor Grimes '09 and Grace Porter '12. Porter's athleticism proved critical to the boat's speed in the building breeze. While it was her debut to college sailing, her results prove she is no stranger to the collegiate-style racing. Undoubtedly, she will have a big impact for the Cardinal this year.

Sailing in the B-boat was skipper Carolyn Prioleau '12 and crew Catherine Cu '09. With a second place result after 10 races in their division, the overall combined team score put the Cardinal in first place at the end of the one-day regatta.

On Sunday, the format of this traditionally two-day regatta was deferred for some exciting two vs. two team racing action. Not only was the Stanford team excited to see all 18 brand new FJs in action, but they were also excited to give female skippers in the Pacific Conference a shot at this particular sailing discipline, one that is often dominated by male skippers in its normal coed format. "The 2v2 event Sunday was a great next step for women's college sailing since the clinic was a great learning experience where all of the coaches were able to constantly provide feedback while racing," said senior skipper Taylor Grimes. "Our women's team was especially excited about the opportunity to team race as it requires more thinking and quick action than fleet racing."

Next weekend is another busy one for the Stanford Sailing Team, as they send their women's team to compete in the Navy Fall Women's Intersectional at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Several coed teams will be driving half way across the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island to compete on Cal's home waters in the Stoney Burke Regatta.
