Cambridge, Mass.-- Stanford Sailing finished in 15th place at the 68th annual Schell Regatta in New England, battling stiff winds all weekend, while the women's team was last at the Victorian Coffee Urn.
The Cardinal "A" team, captained by sophomore Nick Dugdale with freshman Rebecca King, started off the day strong, finishing third in the first race of the day (13th of 20 overall), followed by an eighth place and sixth place showing. But they were disqualified in the 16th race and had to retire after finishing the 18th race, finishing second to last in the 19th race before closing out the regatta third in the 20th race with 231 points. Despite the problems, they were 11th amongst other "A" competitors.
The "B" team finished with 261 points for 492 total points, on an up and down day, finishing last three times, but also finishing in the top-10 in another four of the eight races. Captained by Justin Doane, they were 17th amongst "B" teams.
At the Women's Urn, hosted by Harvard, the Cardinal finished with 205 points, the "A" team, captained by junior Hannah Burroughs with sophomore Margaret Hayden had their best finish of ninth in the seventh of eight races. The "B" team, which rotated through four sailors, faired better with a 13th place finish among "B" racers with 96 points, finishing as high as sixth in the seventh race.
No. 2-ranked Boston College was the overall winner with 57 points at the Urn, while No. 1-ranked Yale came from behind to beat No. 2-ranked Roger Williams for the Bulldogs' first win at the event since 1976.
Stanford, which is ranked No. 15 in both the coed and women's divisions, will close out the fall season with regattas each weekend through Thanksgiving, hosting the annual Big Sail on Tuesday, November 17 the week of the Big Game at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.
