Stanford Men Sweep Davis Invite

March 3, 2013

PORT OF SACRAMENTO, Calif. - It was five wins in five races Sunday for Stanford men's rowing at the UC Davis Invite at Port of Sacramento.

Victories were registered by Stanford's I Eight, II Eight, Four, Frosh Eight and Novice Four over crews from UC Davis, Santa Clara and Sonoma State. The event served as the Cardinal's preseason tuneup ahead of the San Diego Crew Classic April 6-7.

"Today saw outstanding focus, execution and effort by each team member," said Stanford men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "Our coxswains were exceptional and our oarsmen brought passion and fire to the race course. Davis hosted a fine regatta that allowed us to compete at a high level on March 3."

Sunday opened with the Four winning its four-boat race in a time of 6:46, four seconds ahead of the Stanford B boat. Both boats out-distanced the UC Davis and Sonoma State entries by over 30 seconds.

Next up was the Frosh Eight, which crossed the line in 6:10.6, 40 seconds ahead of runner-up Santa Clara. The II Eight, racing against the Broncos, would turn in a time of 6:05.4 to out-pace the Broncos by 36 seconds.

The I Eight, seeing its first action of the New Year, completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:52.7. The boat's winning time was just under 17 seconds faster than second-place Santa Clara and 34 seconds ahead of Sonoma State.

The day ended with the Novice Four defeating boats from UC Davis, Santa Clara and Sonoma State with a time of 6:53.1 for a 13-second victory.
