UCLA Match Goes Unfinished

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 38 Stanford and No. 2 UCLA were locked in a 1-1 tie before rain forced the cancellation of Sunday’s match at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

What figured to be a challenging homestand against two of the nation’s elite programs instead resulted in a pair of cancellations. Stanford’s contest against No. 3 USC on Friday was also washed away by rain.

Originally scheduled to start at noon, Sunday’s match against UCLA (5-0) was delayed two hours before the rain subsided and courts became playable.

Despite the layoff, Stanford (3-1) came out strong and captured the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. Daniel Ho and Robert Stineman prevailed 6-5 (7-2) on court two, winning their first match as a doubles team.

The upset-minded Cardinal continued its momentum in singles play, winning first sets on four of six courts.

UCLA evened the match at 1-1 following Mackenzie McDonald’s 6-4, 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 position.

Stanford was leading on courts five and six when the rain returned at 4:15 p.m. When both schools could not agree to continue playing indoors, the match was cancelled. Only individual results from the completed matches count toward players’ records.

Stanford is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22, hosting California at 1 p.m.

Matches over the next month will be played under the experimental rules format. For men’s matches, the rules are as follows:

The dual match will consist of three doubles matches played first (worth a total of one point), followed by six singles matches, each individual match worth one point. Four points are required to win the team match.

The three doubles matches will each consist of one set to 6, with no-ad scoring and a tie-breaker at 5 all. Once a team has won two doubles matches, the remaining doubles match shall not be completed.

Six singles matches will follow the doubles. Each singles match is two out of three sets, with each set using no-ad scoring, and a tie- breaker at 5-all in each set.

All singles matches will be played to completion unless both coaches agree to do otherwise.

There will be no warm-up against opponents before the first point is played in doubles and singles: players will be expected to warm- up with their own team prior to the scheduled match time.
