STANFORD, Calif. - Rising senior David Boote won The Welsh Amateur on Friday, defeating Elis Lewis, 4 & 3, in the 36-hole final at Prestatyn Golf Club in Prestatyn, North Wales. Boote was 2-up after 18 holes and closed out the match on the 15th hole.
Boote advanced to the finals with a tough 19-hole win against 18-year-old Thomas Williams in the semifinals, making birdie on the first extra hole.
A human biology major, Boote was an All-Pac-12 second team selection in 2014-15, helping the Cardinal win an unprecedented second consecutive conference title. He has already been named one of 20 preliminary members of the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup Team.

Rising junior Maverick McNealy tied for second in the 49th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. McNealy closed with a 1-under-par 69 to finish at 4-under 276 and tied with Beau Hossler. Oregon sophomore Aaron Wise posted a final-round 66 to win the tournament by two strokes with a four-day total of 6-under 274.
McNealy, winner of the Nicklaus Award and Haskins Award following the 2014-15 season, collected three birdies and two bogeys in the final round.
Rising junior Viraat Badhwar of Queensland, Australia, closed with a 73 and tied for 55th.

The men’s golf program earned President’s Special Recognition in the 2015 GCAA Team Academic Awards, as announced Friday. To be eligible, team members must have a combined grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Harvard was the overall winner in Division I. Other schools receiving President’s Special Recognition were Bradley, Brown, DePaul, East Tennessee State, Francis Marion, Penn State, Utah Valley and Valparaiso.
