On to the Grand Finals

SAN DIEGO – Stanford men's rowing saw all three of its entries advance to Sunday's Grand Finals during heat racing Saturday at the season-opening San Diego Crew Classic.
 
The Cardinal varsity eight placed second in its heat, while the second varsity eight and novice eight both captured heat wins during the regatta's opening day.  
 
"Both the freshman and the second varsity eight won a six-lane race, which is exceptional," Stanford men's rowing head coach Craig Amerkhanian said. "The varsity eight raced well against a very strong Yale crew. Today represents an outstanding start to our 2017 season. We look forward to continuing our momentum tomorrow."
 
The varsity eight opened Stanford's competition in the regatta with a second-place finish in its heat in the Copley Cup. The Cardinal raced down the course in 5:46.489, a little more than three seconds back of No. 2 Yale (5:42.753). University of Victoria placed third with a time of 5:53.928.  Stanford advanced to the Grand Final on Sunday at 10:24 a.m. PT.
 
The Cardinal second varsity eight won its heat in the Sharp Cabrillo Cup with a time of 6:02.840, finishing ahead of second-place Michigan RA (6:05.856), third-place San Diego (6:09.980), fourth-place UC San Diego (6:12.796) and fifth-place Colorado (6:39.541). With the heat win, Stanford advanced to Sunday's Grand Final at 9:44 a.m. PT.  
 
Stanford's novice eight also captured the win in its heat on Saturday in the Derek Guelker Cup, racing down the course in 6:16.330. The Cardinal won by open water over second-place Orange Coast (6:23.224), third-place UC San Diego (6:41.668), fourth-place UC Davis (6:47.414) and fifth-place Colorado (6:59.286). Stanford advanced to Sunday's Grand Final at 9:36 a.m. PT.
