STANFORD, Calif. – Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Andrew Thomas has been called by U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team head coach Jason Kreis for its training camp in Herriman, Utah from June 9-16.
The Utah camp comes two weeks after Thomas and 12 other U-23 MNT players joined the senior MNT in Annapolis, Md. For a combined summer training camp from May 26-June 2.
Thomas had a superb first season in goal for the Cardinal, which finished eighth in the nation in team goals against average (0.625) in 2018. He was ninth individually in that category with a conference-leading 0.626 goals against average and also was third in the country in save percentage (.854), sixth in solo shutouts (11) and 13th in total saves (82).
Thomas made a career-high 11 stops in Stanford's third-round scoreless draw at Saint Mary's on Nov. 25 and stopped the Gaels' first penalty kick in the shootout, which the Cardinal eventually won 4-2. He earned spots on the Top Drawer Soccer Freshmen Best XI first team and College Soccer News All-Freshman first team at season's end in addition to landing on the All-Pac-12 first team.
An engineering physics major raised in London, Thomas was born in Moscow and holds triple citizenship (United Kingdom, United States, Russia).
The nation's most successful collegiate men's soccer program over the last half-decade, Stanford has won three of the last four NCAA titles, five consecutive Pac-12 championships and posted a 77-14-18 (.789) overall record since 2014. The Cardinal returns nine starters to a team that went 12-4-5 in 2018 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament.
