STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford redshirt senior center back Tanner Beason was named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy it was announced Tuesday.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual intercollegiate award administered by United Soccer Coaches and presented annually at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. This year's trophy presentation and banquet will take place Friday, Jan. 3.
Three from the group of 15 will be named finalists in mid-December following a vote of NCAA Division I coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer, has been awarded annually since 1967. In 2015, two-time Stanford All-American and two-time MLS Cup champion Jordan Morris became the first Cardinal men's player to win the honor.
After starting the first 76 matches of his career, Beason missed his first game at Stanford on Oct. 6 against Oregon State following a second-half injury sustained against Washington three days prior. He missed the next eight games before returning to the starting lineup in the regular-season finale against Cal. Beason, a first-team All-American last season, was also a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2018 and became the first person on conference history to sweep both Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards.
He is fourth on the team in goals (4) and points (9) in just 12 matches played this year.
The Cardinal continues its quest for a fourth national championship when it heads to Clemson for a quarterfinal on Friday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. PT. The Cardinal has advanced to its past three College Cups with road victories in the round of eight, with wins at Wake Forest in 2015 and 2017 and Louisville in 2016.
