Stanford in the NFL: Week 7

Zach Ertz was among the Stanford alums to make big plays last week

ZACH ERTZ SCORED a touchdown to help the surging Washington Commanders stay atop the division lead, Justin Reid intercepted a pass to help Kansas City stay undefeated, and Los Angeles Chargers receiver Simi Fehoko received his first NFL start. These were among the highlights among Stanford alums in Week 7 of the NFL.

The following is a summary of how former Cardinal fared in the NFL this week:

Washington starting tight end Zach Ertz caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Mariota in the Commanders’ 40-7 victory over visiting Carolina, his first score in a Washington uniform. Ertz caught four passes for 40 yards, including the TD with 10 seconds left in the first half that gave Washington a 27-0 lead. It was an interesting pairing, considering Ertz and Mariota were on opposite sides of Stanford’s epic 17-14 overtime victory over No. 2 Oregon in Eugene in 2012. Ertz played 40 offensive snaps in the victory, which lifted the Commanders’ record to 5-2 atop the NFC East.

Kansas City starting strong safety Justin Reid intercepted a pass in a 28-18 victory over the 49ers in Santa Clara, helping the Chiefs improve to 6-0 as the only undefeated team remaining in the NFL. Reid, who attended Stanford’s home game on Saturday against SMU, broke up a pass and had nine tackles, including six solo. Reid’s interception came a play after a fake punt failed for the Chiefs in the first quarter. It was Reid’s first interception of the season and ninth of his seven-year career. Reid played 59 defensive snaps and three on special teams.

Minnesota starting nose tackle Harrison Phillips had four tackles, including two solo, in the Vikings’ 31-29 loss to visiting Detroit. Phillips was in on 48 defensive snaps as the Vikings lost for the first time this season.

Los Angeles Chargers fourth-year receiver Simi Fehoko earned his first NFL start and had a career-highs in catches (three) and yards (45) in a 17-15 loss at Arizona on Monday night. Fehoko had a deep 25-yard catch from Justin Herbert that led to a fourth quarter field goal among his career-high 61 offensive plays. For the Cardinals, starting receiver Michael Wilson had one catch for 15 yards among his 44 offensive plays. Tight end Elijah Higgins had one catch for one yard for the Cardinals, playing 21 offensive downs and 10 on special teams.

Houston tight end Dalton Schultz had one catch for 28 yards in the Texans’ 24-22 loss at Green Bay. The first-quarter play was the second-longest of the game for Houston. Schultz played 50 offensive snaps.

Miami’s Jake Bailey averaged 47.7 yards on six punts in the Dolphins’ 16-10 loss at Indianapolis. Bailey had three punts inside the 20 – including a 59-yarder in the first quarter that was downed at the 10 -- and had a net average of 45.5.

Los Angeles Rams starting tight end Colby Parkinson had two catches for 32 yards in a 20-15 victory over visiting Las Vegas. His 23-yard gain off a short pass from Matthew Stafford was followed on the next play by a second-quarter touchdown for a 7-3 lead. Parkinson was in on 35 offensive snaps. Kicker Joshua Karty made two of three extra-point tries and missed a 35-yard field goal attempt. For the Raiders, offensive guard Andrus Peat was in on three offensive plays – all as a tackle eligible – and five on special teams.

New Orleans starting left cornerback Paulson Adebo had six tackles in the Saints’ 33-10 loss to visiting Denver on Thursday night before leaving the game with an injury with 9:52 left in the second quarter after 28 defensive plays. Adebo broke his right femur on a tackle and had surgery on Friday morning and will be out for the year.

Jacksonville offensive tackle Walker Little played 56 offensive snaps and four on special teams in the Jaguars’ 32-16 victory over New England at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday. New England starting tight end Austin Hooper had four catches for 32 yards among his 23 offensive plays and two on special teams.

Philadelphia defensive tackle Thomas Booker had three tackles in the Eagles’ 28-3 victory at the New York Giants. Booker played 13 defensive snaps and two downs on special teams. New York starting inside linebacker Bobby Okereke had six tackles, including four solo, while in on 57 defensive plays and four on special teams.

New York Jets defensive tackle Solomon Thomas had a quarterback hurry among his 24 defensive plays and seven special team snaps in a 37-15 loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday night.

Buffalo defensive end Casey Toohill was in on 12 defensive plays and eight on special teams in the Bills’ 34-10 victory over visiting Tennessee.

Houston quarterback Davis Mills and Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Foster Sarell did not play.

Miami cornerback Ethan Bonner, Cincinnati receiver Trenton Irwin, and Philadelphia quarterback Tanner McKee were inactive.

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Tucker Fisk and Washington receiver Brycen Tremayne were on the practice squads.

Atlanta center Drew Dalman, Pittsburgh offensive guard Nate Herbig, and San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey and linebacker Curtis Robinson, were on injured reserve.
