Stanford in the NFL: Week 9

A summary of how Stanford alums fared in the NFL last weekend

AS RUNNING BACK Christian McCaffrey draws closer to returning to action for the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta center Drew Dalman does the same, several former Cardinal had solid performances in Week 9 of the NFL season. 

The following is a summary of how former Cardinal fared in the NFL this week:

New York Jets defensive tackle Solomon Thomas had a sack, solo tackle, and a quarterback hurry in a 21-13 victory over visiting Houston on Thursday night. Thomas sacked C.J. Stroud for a four-yard loss on third-and-10 late in the second quarter, causing the Texans to attempt a 56-yard field goal that was no good. Thomas played 22 defensive snaps and six on special teams. Houston starting tight end Dalton Schultz had three catches for 21 yards while in on 56 offensive snaps.

Arizona tight end Elijah Higgins caught two passes for 34 yards in the Cardinals’ 29-9 victory over visiting Chicago. Both receptions resulted in first downs, including a 23-yarder in the fourth quarter, helping the Cardinal (5-4) stay on top of the NFC West. Higgins was in on 25 offensive plays and nine on special teams. Starting Cardinals’ receiver Michael Wilson played 41 offensive snaps and one on special teams.

Minnesota starting nose tackle Harrison Phillips had five tackles, including three solo, in the Vikings’ 21-13 victory over visiting Indianapolis. Four of his tackles were for one yard or no gain. Phillips played on 31 defensive snaps.

Kansas City starting strong safety Justin Reid had four tackles, a tackle for loss, and broke up a pass as the Chiefs remained undefeated with a 30-24 overtime victory over visiting Tampa Bay. Reid stopped running back Bucky Irving for a one-yard loss on a screen pass in the second quarter. Reid was in on 49 defensive snaps and four on special teams, while the Chiefs improved to 8-0.

Jacksonville starting left tackle Walker Little played every offensive snap, and one on special teams, in the Jaguars’ 28-23 loss at Philadelphia. Philadelphia defensive tackle Thomas Booker was in on one defensive play.

Los Angeles Rams kicker Joshua Karty booted field goals of 38 and 21 yards and converted two extra-point tries in a 26-20 overtime victory at Seattle. Starting Rams tight end Colby Parkinson played 32 offensive snaps.

Washington starting tight end Zach Ertz caught one pass for five yards and played 30 offensive snaps in the Commanders’ 27-22 victory over the visiting New York Giants. The surprising Commanders lead the NFC East with a 7-2 record. Starting inside linebacker Bobby Okereke had nine tackles, including a tackle for loss, among his 61 defensive snaps (98 percent) and five on special teams for the Giants. Okereke is tied for 25th in the NFL in tackles, with 64.

Buffalo defensive end Casey Toohill had a tackle among his 11 defensive snaps and 10 on special teams in the Bills’ 30-27 victory over visiting Miami on Sunday, helping Buffalo (7-2) take a commanding lead in the AFC East. Dolphins’ cornerback Ethan Bonner played 19 downs on special teams. Miami’s Jake Bailey had one punt for 37 yards and pushed the returner out of bounds for a tackle. He also was the holder on field-goal and extra-point tries.  

Cincinnati receiver Trenton Irwin returned three punts for 26 yards, including a 13-yarder, in the Bengals’ 41-24 victory over visiting Las Vegas. Irwin played 22 offensive downs and five on special teams. Raiders’ offensive guard Andrus Peat was in on 11 offensive plays and three on special teams.

New England tight end Austin Hooper caught one pass for eight yards in the Patriots’ 20-17 overtime loss at Tennessee. Hooper was in on 27 offensive plays and eight on special teams.

Los Angeles Chargers receiver Simi Fehoko was in on nine offensive plays and 17 special teams downs before leaving a 27-10 victory at Cleveland in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury.

Houston quarterback Davis Mills and Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Foster Sarell did not play.

Philadelphia quarterback Tanner McKee was inactive.

Atlanta center Drew Dalman was designated to return to practice from injured reserve, but was not activated.

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Tucker Fisk and Washington receiver Brycen Tremayne were on practice squads.

San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey and linebacker Curtis Robinson, and Pittsburgh offensive guard Nate Herbig were on injured reserve while their teams had byes.

New Orleans cornerback Paulson Adebo was on injured reserve.

In the Canadian Football League, James Vaughters played in every game for the Calgary Stampeders and made 18 starts at defensive end. He had 32 defensive tackles including one tackle for loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick on an extra-point attempt. In late July and early August, Vaughters recorded a sack in three consecutive games.
