Post-Match Quotes
Stanford vs. USC - May 21,1999
Stanford head coach Frank Brennan
On the match against USC
"Today worked out pretty well. We had this injury with Teryn Ashley so it's an up-and-down thing. We don't know what's happening from day to day… maybe tomorrow she'll be back, maybe not. She played well on Thursday, today she couldn't get it done, so we had to pull her. So it's a little scary when everybody punches up one. I think we had some good performances. Teryn didn't play, but she led them off of the court. I think (Marissa Irvin) had a routine match. (Gabriel Lastra) was key… she moved from three, where she's been struggling a little bit, to two and did a nice job there… a great group of fighters. I'm very pleased with the performance overall."
On the upcoming match against Cal
"I guess we'll limp into the match tomorrow and see our friends from across the Bay. We played them twice this year and split, so I guess this is the rubber match. They're a very good team, good doubles, well-coached. It's going to be a great mach."
On Southern California possibly being weary after Thursday's match, which lasted until 3:29 a.m.
"No, (I don't think they were weary), in fact, I think we had a couple of players who were tired. Some of them may have been mentally tired, not physically. I take my hat off (to the USC coaches). That was a tremendous coaching performance to get the girls out here after that and nobody whined. They played tough."
Southern California Head Coach Richard Gallien
"Certainly I have mixed feelings because there's a disappointment when the tournament is over, but in terms of my feelings towards my team I was very proud. Stanford is a great program, and our program at USC was once that great with many national championships. We've been working hard to get back in contention for these things, so it was a big step for us to get back and be among the top 10 and to have something build on for the future."
