Postgame Quotes

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Jason Young scattered six hits and struck out seven in a complete game performance as Stanford defeated Loyola Marymount 10-2 in the first round of the NCAA Regionals at Sunken Diamond. Stanford (44-13) will now play North Carolina in the winners bracket portion of the regional tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. LMU (33-27) now moves to losers bracket and will play Nevada tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

Stanford scored a single run in the second inning on an RBI base hit by catcher Damien Alvarado that scored Josh Hochgesang, who reached base hit after he was hit by a pitch. However, the big inning for Stanford was the third, when the Cardinal put five runs on the board. After Jeff Rizzo singled to open up the inning, the next two batters walked to load the bases. With one out, another walk made it 2-0 and then a sacrifice fly by Nick Day gave Stanford a three-run advantage. The Cardinal then got a break when an error by the Lions prolonged the inning and Stanford went on to score three more runs in the third. Stanford later added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI base hit by Day that made it an 8-0 score.

Loyola Marymount later fought back with two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Tommy Perez, but the 8-2 score is as close as the Lions would come.

Leading the offensive attack for the Cardinal were Joe Borchard, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored, and Nick Day, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
