Game #4

STANFORD, Calif. -- John Gall's three-run homer in the ninth capped a five-run inning for Stanford, giving the Cardinal a 7-4 victory over North Carolina in the NCAA Regional at Sunken Diamond.

The Tar Heels (41-17) will face Nevada tonight at 7 p.m. in an elimination game. Stanford will face the winner of that game in tomorrow's 1 p.m. championship game. As this regional is a double elimination tournament, a second championship game will be played at 5 p.m. if necessary.

The Cardinal has now won 18 of its last 19 contests and improved its record to 45-13.

Gall registered his 10th homer of the season taking an 0-2 pitch with two outs on the board over left field. The long ball also marked Gall's sixth in his last seven outings. The Cardinal entered the inning down by two runs, but received a double by Damien Alvarado and singles by Craig Thompson and Jeff Rizzo. Two North Carolina errors added to the Cardinal scoring run.

Stanford, the visiting team in this matchup, scored first on Eric Bruntlett's sacrifice fly, bringing in Nick Day. The Cardinal scored again when Day's double down the third-base line brought in Alvarado. Stanford's Justin Wayne was pitching a shutout through six innings, but allowed a single and three consecutive walks to start the seventh. Tony Cogan replaced Wayne on the mound, but hit North Carolina's Dan Moylan to bring in the Tar Heels' second run. One more run scored before Chris LaMarsh struck out looking to end the inning. North Carolina added one run in the eighth before the Cardinal began its ninth-inning rally.

Leading the Tar Heels was Moylan, who finished 4-for-4 with one RBI.
