The game was the opener of a three-game non-conference series between the Bay Area rivals, who will meet in Pac-10 play in Berkeley on April 23-25. Game two of this series is on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. California jumped on Stanford early, and took a 5-2 lead after four innings. The Cardinal then rallied for five runs on four walks, two hits and two hit batsmen in the top of the fifth against three Golden Bear relievers. Hochgesang's two-run single up the middle tied the game at 5, and Borchard put the hosts ahead for good with a two-run double to left-center.
