LOS ANGELES - Stanford sophomore RHP Jason Young pitched a complete game and struck out 10 as the No. 4 Cardinal baseball team defeated No. 19 USC, 5-2, on Saturday at Dedeaux Field in a non-conference game.
USC fell to 4-11 this season. Stanford improved to 12-4 and has won the first two games of this three-game series.
Young improved to 4-1 and pitched his third complete game of 1999. He gave up four hits, two walks and two runs.
The game was close early, as USC sophomore RHP Rik Currier (1-2) allowed only one run (on an RBI single by junior DH Craig Thompson in the top of the third inning) over the first five frames.
But the Cardinal broke the game open in the top of the sixth, as Thompson led off with a walk, junior CF Edmund Muth singled, senior 3B Josh Hochgesang knocked an RBI double, sophomore RF Joe Borchard singled in a run and junior 1B John Gall had a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Gall drove in another run in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice to give Stanford a 5-0 lead.
In the meantime, Young allowed only one hit over the first six innings. The Trojans had two hits in the seventh inning but couldn't score. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, USC junior C Eric Munson slugged his eighth home run of the year with one runner on base to make it 5-2.
Hochgesang and Borchard each went 3-for-4 for the Cardinal, while freshman 3B Beau Craig had a pair of singles for the Trojans.
USC and Stanford finish their three-game series on Sunday (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m.
