Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander Jason Young (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS) threw a complete game three-hitter to lead No. 5 Stanford (7-3) to a 7-1 win over host Santa Clara (1-6) on Monday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Cardinal completed the three-game series over the Broncos with the victory, and has now won six in a row overall. The complete game was the first of Young's career, and the first by a Cardinal since Jeff Austin threw a complete game five-hitter in a 4-2 home win over USC on May 9, 1998. Young threw just 104 pitches in the contest, and allowed just the one earned run, while walking two and striking out eight. In his last two outings, Young has allowed just six hits and one run over 15.0 innings, while walking three and striking out 17. He is now 2-1 on the season with a 2.08 ERA.

Senior Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) gave Stanford all the offense it would need with a three-run home run in the top off the first off Bronco starter Peter Rice (0-2; Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto HS). With one out, Hochgesang blasted a 0-1 offering over the left field fence for his fourth homer of the year. The round-tripper was the 33rd of his Stanford career, and moves him into a tie for eighth with Jon Schaeffer (1995-97) on Stanford's all-time list.

The Cardinal extended the lead to 5-0 with single runs in the third and sixth, before Santa Clara avoided the shutout with a single run in the seventh. Stanford wrapped up the scoring with two in the top of the eighth to outscore the Broncos 20-9 in the three-game sweep. Stanford finished the afternoon with 10 hits, including two apiece by Hochgesang and juniors John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS). Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) and Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS).

The Cardinal returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Sacramento State at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Santa Clara is next in action on Wednesday when it hosts California at 2 p.m.
